Profile for
Tom McEvay
Educational Advisor
Tom accepted the position as Educational Advisor for the Bulldogs in the spring of 2004 and has been busy since then working with the coaches, management and players in a variety of areas associated with education and education planning. Tom's background makes him well suited for this position. He is currently Principal of Alternative Programs for School District # 70 Alberni and has been an educator in the Alberni Valley for 28 years. Tom has been a classroom teacher, a school counselor, a vice-Principal and for the past 19 years a Principal in a number of local schools. He has a Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of British Columbia and a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Victoria.
Tom grew up in Victoria and started playing hockey when he was quite young in the Esquimalt Minor Hockey Association. As with many Canadian kids his young life revolved around hockey as he advanced through the rep system in Esquimalt as a goaltender. Tom was eventually picked up by the Victoria Cougars organization of the Western Canada Major Junior League. Coming from a family that emphasized education first, Tom was fortunate to receive a Molson Hockey Scholarship after a couple of years of Junior B and then Junior A hockey. In 1973 he entered UBC where he was able to combine hockey and an education. While at UBC, Tom also played another season of Junior hockey with the Vancouver Jr. Canucks.
Graduating from UBC in 1978 Tom came to Port Alberni for his first teaching job and quickly became highly involved in the community. Many in the valley know of Tom's role in building the powerful Alberni Valley Wrestling program. Married in 1980 to Patricia, they have two boys, 19 yr old Patrick and 14 yr old Cody and they make their home at Sproat Lake. For many years Tom coached both his sons in Alberni Minor hockey. In the mid 90's Tom became a big part of the Alberni District Arena Society that eventually succeeded in building the Alberni Valley Multiplex. He was a strong supporter of the quest to get a Junior A franchise for our community.
When the owners of the Bulldogs approached Tom to consider coming on board as their Educational Advisor he saw it as another opportunity to contribute to his community while combining his passion for helping young people and his long association with the great game of hockey. In his role Tom works with the players in setting up education programs for them at North Island College, in the School District or online. He assists them in future educational and career planning including doing the right things to be considered for hockey scholarships. Tom's education committee has set up preparation programs for the players for the US Colleges SAT exams. In 2006 the Bulldogs were extremely proud to have 8 players receive scholarships to attend universities or colleges in Canada or the US.
