The Alberni Valley Bulldogs won their 2nd straight game over the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Saturday night at the Dawg Pound. The emotion filled 9-3 win set the stage for tonight’s contest at 6:00 pm, also here at the Multiplex.
The scoring came early and often last night as the Bulldogs built a 3-1 lead before the game was 10 minutes old. They would go on to add 3 more in the 2nd, and 3 more in the 3rd to cap off the blow out.
David Sacco netted his 1st career BCHL hat trick as his goal total ballooned from 3 to 6 on the season. Chase Klassen (9 & 10) and Matt Kursonis (8 & 9) each scored twice, while Matthew Maltais (10th), and Mason Croucher (3rd) scored singles to round out the scoring. Kursonis also chipped in with 2 assists for a 4 point night, a career high for him. Sacco also had a pair of assists for a 5 point night, and 1st star honours on the night.
Nicholas Beneteau extended his point-streak to 17 games with a two assists. The 17 game streak matched the streak of Penticton’s Bradley Nadeau from Sept 23rd to Nov 11th. Beneteau has 6 goals and 23 assists during the 17 game stretch.
The two teams combined for 75 minutes in penalties in a game that had 9 misconduct penalties between the 2 teams.
Hobie Hedquist earned the win in goals for the Bulldogs as he stopped 27 of 30 on the night.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 26-17-3-1 and moved back into sole possession of 3rd place in the Coastal Conference. The Caps meanwhile dropped their 6th straight and fell to 10-33-2-2 on the year.
After tonight’s game, the Bulldogs will hit the road for a pair of crucial games against the Victoria Grizzlies. The Grizzlies are currently 2 points behind the Bulldogs with 1 game in hand. The Grizzlies have been solid at the Q Centre all season with just 4 regulation losses.
