The Alberni Valley Bulldogs won their final game of the 2018/19 regular season, topping the Powell River Kings by a 3-2 score in a shootout on Sunday afternoon at the Alberni Valley Metroplex.
Deepkaran Hans opened the scoring for Powell River midway through the second period but the Bulldogs replied six minutes later when Josh Zary tipped home an Aaron Bohlinger shot on an Alberni power play.
The Kings took back the lead before the end of the second frame when Ethan Schmunk poked home his own rebound, but the hosts battled back once more when a Keaton Mastrodonato shot block in the defensive zone led to an odd-man rush and a goal from Austin Spiridakis.
Both teams traded chances through the remainder of regulation and an overtime period that included three power-plays, with John Hawthorne and Matteo Paler-Chow each making a handful a spectacular saves. And the game was ultimately decided in a shootout, as Bohlinger and Dawson Tritt each scored on their attempts while Hawthorne stimied both Kings’ shooters.
The Bulldogs will now prepare for their first round playoff series, which begins Friday in Victoria against the Grizzlies.
