Bulldogs Lose Season Opener 6-2 to the Grizzlies

October 8th was the start of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ 2021-22 BCHL season. They went into Victoria to face the Victoria Grizzlies and came out with a loss by a score of 6-2.

The game did not start with both teams going guns blazing out of the gate. Instead, neither team was able to find the back of the net and the first period was left in a 0-0 deadlock.

The shots were 12-10 for the Grizzlies.

The second period is where the scoring started to begin. The first two goals were scored by Grizzlies forwards Matthew Wood and Connor Eddy. The latter was scored shorthanded just before the halfway mark of the period.

However, the Bulldogs would respond on the powerplay and defenceman Braden Blace would be the first player to score for the Bulldogs in the 2021-22 season. The goal was assisted by Cole Melady and Brandon Buhr. And it would remain 2-1 going into the intermission.

The shots were 15-8 for the Grizzlies, bringing that total to 27-18.

In the third, the Bulldogs would tie the game just 11 seconds in on the powerplay from Finn Brown to make it 2-2. However, the Grizzlies would take over from there, as they would score four unanswered goals.

Wood would score once again just under two minutes after the Bulldogs tied the game on the powerplay. Followed by Declan Ride, Justin Gibson and Clark Hiebert on the powerplay once again. Making it a final score of 6-2 for the Grizzlies.

The shots for the third were 13-13, making it 40-31 for the Grizzlies overall.

Both teams scored two goals on the powerplay.

Bulldogs were 2-5 and the Grizzlies were 2-4.

The next Bulldogs game will be Saturday, October 9th at 7:00 PM and it will be against the Cowichan Valley Capitals at the Cowichan Community Centre.
