Bulldogs top Capitals 5-1 for second straight night

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs concluded their preseason with a second straight 5-1 win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals Saturday night at the Multiplex, a night after earning a 5-1 win over the Capitals in Duncan on Friday night.

Josh Van Unen’s first of the preseason with 1:01 to play in the first gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes, before the Bulldogs added to their lead on the power play before the second period was a minute old as Brandon Buhr one-timed home a Stephen Castagna set up in the slot, with Josh Van Unen also assisting on the play. Brandon Buhr’s second of the night just past the five minute mark of the second made it 3-0, when he buried an Emanuelson Charbonneau rebound at the side of the net on the rush with Ryan Nause also assisting. Nicholas Beneteau completed the barrage two minutes later on a Mirko Buttazzoni set up in front to make it a 4-0 game seven minutes into the second. The Capitals would get on the board with 5:33 to play in the period as David Jacobs picked the top corner on a short-handed in alone chance to make it 4-1. The Bulldogs would take a 5-1 lead with 33 seconds to play in the period when Josh Van Unen scored his second of the game in tight with Brady McIsaac and Jeremy Fontaine assisting to complete the scoring.

The Bulldogs went 1 for 3 on the power play while Cowichan went 0 for 3 on the power play while also scoring once while shorthanded.

Shots favoured the Bulldogs 44-20, with Jackson Glassford earning the win while Jayden Schull look the loss.

With the win, the Bulldogs conclude their preseason with a 5 and 1 record and a three game winning streak.

They next see action Friday night in Victoria, as they visit the Grizzlies to open the regular season.
