Dogs’ season ends with home ice loss to Grizzlies

Carter Berger’s third period goal gave the Victoria Grizzlies the lead they needed, and although the Bulldogs scored on a late power play they dropped Game 4 of their Island Division playoff series by a 3-2 score and saw their season end on Wednesday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

The Grizzlies once again struck early, as Alex Newhook broke the ice 15 seconds in after a dump between the Bulldogs net took a fortuitous bounce back in front of the Alberni net. The Bulldogs drew even at the midway point of the second on another strange play, as Michael Hodge intercepted a pass behind the Victoria net and banked the puck off Grizzlies netminder Kurtis Chapman and into the net.

Berger broke the tie 3:17 into the third period, and while the Bulldogs had a number of close calls they eventually fell behind by two when Henri Schreifels scored into an empty net with two minutes left on the clock. Alberni made it close with 33 seconds left, but couldn’t find an equalizer and dropped their fourth straight game against the division champs.

Team MVP John Hawthorne was named the game’s first star in his final junior game with 39 saves.
