Hammer’s Weekly Preview

The Bulldogs are back in action this week with three more games on their schedule. First up, the ?Battle of the Valleys? returns with a home and home set with the Cowichan Valley Capitals starting Wednesday and the Pound before shifting to the other Valley and a meeting at the Big Stick Friday night. The Surrey Eagles are then back in town Saturday AFTERNOON for a special 3:00pm start time at the Dog Pound.

The Bulldogs and Capitals have played some entertaining games so far this season, with the Caps leading the season series 2-1. The last time these teams hooked up, it was another home and home set in October. The Dogs took game one of the set for their first road win of the season, a come from behind 4-3 win. The Capitals led 3-1 heading into the third before the Dogs tied it up late in regulation and won it in overtime. In the return match at the Dog Pound, the Caps erased a 1-0 Bulldog lead after one period, and they then erased a 2-1 Bulldog lead in the second with two goals in just over two minutes to take a 3-2 lead that they wouldn?t relinquish as an empty netter made the final score 4-2.

The Capitals enter this week with a record of 11-12-0 and 2, good for third in the Island Division, 15 points ahead of the Bulldogs. They were last in action Saturday in Surrey, where they lost their second in a row by a score of 5-2. The Eagles led 1-0 after one period on a Liam Harding goal, before building the lead to 2-0 on a Mike Henderson penalty shot goal just short of the halfway mark of the game. It was 3-0 Surrey after two with Spencer Bennett scoring with less than 30 seconds to play in the period. Andrew Wallace then made it 4-0 Eagles early in the third with a power play marker. The Caps would make a game of it scoring two power play goals in the last half of the third from Spencer Edwards and Mickey Spencer, but that would be as close as they would get as an empty net goal by Spencer Bennett made it 5-2 with just over a minute to play.

Shots favoured Surrey 36-33 with Vinny Lessard picking up the win in net. Chris Rawlings took the loss for the Caps.  The Eagles were 1 for 4 on the power play while the Caps were 2 for 10.

Wednesday?s pregame show from the Dog Pound is on the air at 6:45 with the puck drop and all the play-by-play at 7:00pm. Catch all the action on 93.3 The Peak FM or the BCHL Fanzone

The rematch Friday at the Big Stick is a 7:30 start time so the pre game show kicks off at 7:15.

Saturday is a special 3:00pm start time as the Surrey Eagles pay their final visit of the season to the Pound. The special start time is so the Eagles can get off the Island after the game and return home. The Eagles have done the same thing for the Dogs, as the Saturday January 31st start time at the South Surrey Arena is 3:30, allowing the Dogs to get off the Mainland to return home after the game.

The Eagles enter this week with a record of 11-12-0 and 1, good for third spot on the Mainland, just a point ahead of the Burnaby Express. They have been red hot as of late, going 8-1-0 and 1 in their last 10. They also enter this week on a three game winning streak that started last Thursday with a 4-1 win over the Dogs at the Pound. The next night, they beat the Clippers 3-1 at Frank Crane Arena, before returning home for the previously mentioned 5-2 win over the Capitals at home.

The Eagles have a 2-0 edge over the Dogs in the season series to date, winning game one 7-1 in Surrey back in October. In the most recent meeting last Thursday the Eagles took a 2-1 third period lead and built it to 3-1 with a shorthanded marker. Less than a minute later it was 4-1 Eagles, and that would end up being the final.

Saturday?s pregame show from the Dog Pound kicks off at 2:45 with the puck dropping at 3:00. Get it all on 93.3 The Peak FM and the BCHL Fanzone
