Hammer’s Weekly Recap

The Bulldogs week began Wednesday night when they hosted the Cowichan Valley Capitals in game one of a home and home set. Both teams would have their chances in the opening period of this game, but the goalies were equal to the task to keep it 0-0 after twenty minutes.

It would take an odd goal for the deadlock to be broken, as Joey Massingham would get credit for a shot that hit traffic, bounced high in the air, and went over the head of a bewildered Matthew Wong and landed in the back of the net.  Kevin Lourens would get the lone assist on the scoring play 6:41 into the second. The Capitals built the lead to 2-0 on a great set up from Chris Zaires as he found a wide open Jimmy Geerin driving the net from the right point. Geerin made no mistake, one-timing the pass over Matthew Wong and up under the crossbar. Alex Geller t also picked up an assist on the play 12:30 into the second. The Bulldogs would get on the board to trip the gap to 2-1 in the last minute of the period, as Kevin Ross skated down the left wing and found Evan Witt driving the net in the slot where he put a perfect wrist shot high glove side on Chris Rawlings with just 40 seconds left in the period.  It would be anybody?s game in the third period, with both teams having near misses around the net. The Capitals ended up getting the insurance marker they needed when they went to an extended 5 on 3 power play. Matthew Wong would make several good stops early, and the Caps just missed going up by two as Alex Gellert put his own rebound off the crossbar. Just seconds later Wong would make another good stop on a wide open Gellert off the back post, but this time he found the back of the net with his rebound for a 3-1 score with 5:50 gone in the third. Chris Zaires again picked up  an assist on the play, as did Mickey Spencer. The Caps would put the game to bed seven minutes later as Gellert was again set up on the doorstep by Zaires. Wong would again make the first save, but Gellert banged in the rebound for his second of the game and a 4-1 Capitals lead with 7:58 to play. Assists on the play went to Taylor Holst and Chris Zaires.

Shots favoured the Capitals 38-36 with Matthew Wong and Chris Rawlings being the goalies of record. The Capitals were 1 for 7 on the power play with the 5 on 3 goal, while the Bulldogs were 0 for 5.

Friday night the two teams took to the ice at the Island Savings Centre in Duncan for the back half of the home and home set. Like the first game, neither team could find the net through the first 20 minutes with both goalies being tested and equal to the task. The Capitals would have a 5 on 3 advantage for over 30 seconds, but the Dogs penalty kill held the fort. The only goal of the second period was scored by the Capitals as Zack Currie made a great play to keep the puck in at the left point, before he threw a shot on goal that was stopped by Colin Rundell. Nick Anderson would find the rebound in the slot though and he put it into the open side for the 1-0 Cowichan lead 2:52 into the second. Taylor Holst also picked up an assist on the play. The score stayed 1-0 into the third period when the Dogs came out and connected on a carry-over power play as newly signed Liam Gorges put a shot off the goal from the left point that former Capital Mitch MacMillan redirected past Chris Rawlings. Another former Cap picked up an assist on the play as Brian Kang hustled to the loose puck to get it back to the blue line. The goal came just 50 seconds into the third. The Dogs would take their first lead of the game with 7:39 to play as Brett Mohler scored his first BCHL goal on a cross ice pass from Johnny Rogic. Chris Rawlings made the first save, but the rebound would hit his own defenceman before bouncing underneath him and in. Zack Mazo also picked up an assist on the play. The Capitals would come back to tie the game with 3:16 left in regulation as Spencer Edwards drove down the left wing and found Taylor Holst driving the net for a redirect on the top of the crease for a 2-2 tie. Nick Anderson also picked up an assist on the play. With overtime looming, the Caps would get the heartbreaker with just 30 seconds left as Alex Gellert was sent in on the breakaway by Zack Currie where he went high glove on Colin Rundell for a 3-2 lead and the game?s final score. Anthony Perdicaro also picked up an assist at the 19:30 mark of the third. The Dogs would fight to tie it in the final seconds but they were unable to find the back of the net on a goalmouth scramble.

Final shots favoured the Dogs 34-32 with Colin Rundell and Chris Rawlings being the goalies of record. The Dogs were 1 for 5 on the power play while the Capitals were 0 for 3.

Saturday afternoon the Surrey Eagles visited the Pound for the second and final time this season for a special 3pm start time. The Eagles came out of the gate flying, taking a 1-0 lead on a power play marker just 3:03 into the game as a broken play ended up on the stick of Stephen Ceccanese with a wide open net off the back post. Assists on the play went to Chris Santiago and Adam Hartley. The Eagles would then have a glorious chance to build on their lead with a 5 on 3 power play for over a minute and a half. The Dogs would kill the first penalty off, and they then almost tied the game shorthanded as Jackson Garrett was found behind the Surrey defence coming out of the penalty box. Garrett would deke around Tommy Tartaglione on the breakaway, but he couldn?t find the wide open net as his shot his the goal post. Shortly afterwards the Bulldogs would tie the game up on a power play of their own, as a give-and-go play between Evan Witt and Mitch MacMillan ended up on the tape of Mark Morikawa driving the net where he beat Tommy Tartaglione low blocker side. The goal came 12:28 into the first. The Dogs would take the lead just 2:12 into the second as Brett Mohler and Johnny Rogic won an extended battle behind the Eagles net before Mohler walked out the left side and put a sharp angle shot on goal. Robert Lindores would find the rebound as he drove the net, putting it by Tartaglione for his first BCHL goal and a 2-1 Dogs lead. Just 1:07 later it was 3-1 Dogs as Mitch MacMillan got his own rebound in the slot after a great first save by Tartaglione and put it high into the open side while falling down. Evan Witt and Brian Kang picked up the assists on the play 3:19 into the second. The Eagles would battle back to make it a one goal game as Andrew Wallace picked up a dump-in and from the right corner of the Bulldogs zone fed Mike Henderson driving the net in the slot where he put a one-timer inside the far post on Matthew Wong for a 3-2 score 6:29 into period two. The score would stay that way until just short of nine minutes into the third when Jackson Garrett was set up in the slot by Mark Morikawa. G
