Hammer’s Weekly Recap

The Bulldogs week began Thursday night when they hosted the Surrey Eagles for the first time this season. The Eagles would have several glorious chances early in the game to take the lead, but Colin Rundell came up with a big save in the opening minute and then later on when the Eagles raced in on a 2 on 1 rush.

The Eagles would eventually take a 1-0 lead to the dressing room after the first when they struck on the power play in the late stages of the period as Stephen Ceccanese potted a rebound off of a Tom Janosz point shot. Adam Hartley also picked up an assist on the play. The goal was scored on the power play, and there was also another penalty coming to the Dogs at the time of the goal, 16:47 into the first. The Dogs would come out flying in the second and they would be rewarded with the tying goal early in the period as Mark Morikawa threw the puck at the net from a sharp angle. Tommy Tartaglione thought he had the puck frozen, but it trickled to the top of the crease where Mitch MacMillan drilled it into the open net for a 1-1 tie 5:02 into the second. Evan Witt also picked up an assist on the play. The score wouldn?t stay tied long as the Eagles took the lead back in a hurry with Mike Henderson letting a shot fly from the right wing that went through the blocker arm of Colin Rundell just over three minutes later for a 2-1 Surrey lead at the 8:48 mark of the second. Andrew Wallace and Liam Harding were the set up men as the Eagles took that lead into the third. The Dogs would press for the equalizer in the third period, but it was instead the Eagles that would find the insurance marker shorthanded as Ryan Pajimola blocked a point shot and raced in on the shorthanded breakaway where he beat Colin Rundell five hole for a 3-1 Eagles lead with 8:04 gone in the third. Just 59 seconds later the Eagles put the game to bed scoring on a goalmouth scramble to lead 4-1 with Stephen Ceccanese banging in the loose puck with assists to Chris Santiago and Adam Hartley at 9:03 of the third.

Shots favoured the Bulldogs 35-29 with Colin Rundell and Tommy Tartaglione being the goalies of record. Special teams were a big factor in the game?s offense as the Eagles went 1 for 8 on the power play while also scoring once shorthanded. The Bulldogs were 0 for 3.

After having Friday night off, the Dogs welcomed the Nanaimo Clippers to the Pound on Saturday. After a scoreless first period the Bulldogs came out flying in the second as they got on the board to lead the game 1-0 just 21 seconds in as Mitch MacMillan was set up on the doorstep by Brett Mohler and Evan Witt for a quick one-timer past Evan Smith.  The Clippers would end up finding the equalizer after Connor Krukowski stepped out of the penalty box and found a loose puck off a Joe Perry wrap around attempt that he ripped off the bar and in over Matthew Wong for a 1-1 tie 6:26 into the period. Zac Ashdown also picked up an assist on the play. The Dogs fired back to retake the lead just over a minute later with a goal that was almost a carbon copy of the first scoring play as Mitch MacMillan was again set up on the doorstep by Evan Witt this time, and again Brett Mohler, for a one-timer past Evan Smith and a 2-1 Dogs lead 7:34 in. It would be the Clippers turn this time to fire back quickly, as just over two minutes later Colton Cyr found a loose puck off a shot block and put it up and over Wong for a 2-2 tie at the 9:52 mark with the lone assist to Aaron Enns. The final 30 minutes of regulation would see no scoring as the game went to sudden death overtime. The Dogs had a great chance late in the third to get the go ahead marker on a goalmouth scramble with just minutes remaining but the puck hit the post and stayed out. In the first sudden death period the Clippers found the winner with double OT looming as Anders Franzon raced down the left wing, threw on the brakes and spun towards the net where he put a short-side wrist shot past Matthew Wong for the 3-2 win and elation for the Clippers and heartbreak for the Dogs. Tyler Pistone picked up the lone assist on the play, at the 4:34 mark of overtime.

Final shots favoured Nanaimo 41-29 with Matthew Wong taking the loss and third star honours. Evan Smith picked up the win and second star honours. Special teams were a non factor as the Dogs went 0 for 4 on the power play while the Clippers were 0 for 3.

The Dogs weekend ended Sunday afternoon as they travelled to Powell River to face the Kings. The Kings appeared anything but rusty after a Saturday night off as they came out and threw a tonne of rubber at Colin Rundell who was outstanding in holding the Dogs in it in the early minutes as he made several incredible saves on the doorstep to keep it 0-0. The Kings would finally connect just after a power play chance had ended as Clay Harvey found a loose puck in the crease off a blocked pass attempt and put it past Rundell at the 12:34 mark of the first. No assist was given on the play. Just over a minute later the Kings went up 2-0 as Darcy Oakes began what was going to be a good afternoon for him as he one-timed a feed from Kyle Bodie in the right faceoff dot over the shoulder of Matthew Wong for a 2-0 lead  on the power play 13:44 into the first. The lead was then 3-0 just over two minutes later with Chad Niddery finding a loose puck on a scramble after several saves by Rundell. Mark McKamey picked up the only assist at the 15:46 mark of the first. Colin Rundell would be pulled after this goal, but it certainly wasn?t because he wasn?t playing well. The first period ended with shots on goal favouring Powell River 28 to 2. The Kings came out and picked up right where they left off in the second, with Darcy Oakes converting a cross crease pass for his second of the game just 45 seconds into the period for a 4-0 Kings lead. Kyle Bodie and Erik Vos picked up the assists. The Dogs would get on the board on a 5 on 3 power play to make it 4-1 with Mitch MacMillan roofing a shot from the right faceoff over Carsen Chubak 13:15 into the period. Assists on the play went to Evan Witt and Brett Mohler. Just over a minute later the Kings got that one back with Darcy Oakes completing the hat trick as Clay Harvey drove the net and then slid the puck across the crease for the easy open net put away for Darcy Oakes as he completed the hat trick. Mat Bodie picked up the second assist on the play at the 14:40 mark of the second as the Kings took the 5-1 lead into the third period. They would build the lead to 6-1 in the third when Ben Schmidt found a loose puck on the crease and converted into the open side as Kyle Leahy and Mat Bodie picked up the assists on the fourth Kings power play goal of the game with just 5:10 left in regulation. The game scoring would be complete with another power play goal for the Kings, this one coming on a two man advantage with just 40 seconds left as a point shot was deflected past Matthew Wong. I thought that it was Kyle Leahy got the tip, but the goal was given to Jason Yee with assists going to Kyle Bodie and Reid Campbell as the Kings led 7-1 and that?s the way it ended.
