Hammer’s Weekly Recap

The Dogs took to the ice last week on Thursday night as they hosted the league worst Merritt Centennials as former Bulldog Harrison May made his return to the Dog Pound.

The Bulldogs took the lead just short of 10 minutes into the game when Adam Hout kept the puck in at the blue line and threw it at the net where it was knocked down by Mitch MacMillan in the right circle. MacMillan let a perfectly placed shot go with a quick release that beat May high short side right under the bar. Brett Mohler and Adam Hout picked up the assists on the goal 9:29 into the game. Just over a minute later the Dogs built their lead to 2-0 with a great shorthanded effort by Chris Moulson, who stole the puck in front after the water bottle came off Harrison May?s net and might have provided a perfect distraction for the Centennials goaltender and defenseman. Moulson walked to the net and around May before tucking it home for the first shorthanded goal for the Dogs since November, 11:41 into the first as the Dogs took a 2-0 lead to the room after one. The second period saw the Centennials get into the game, and as a result they would score the only goal of a period that lacked a lot of action. The goal came on the power play in the later stages of the frame, as Dustin Johnson walked right up the middle over the Dogs blue line before making a nice move to slip a Bulldog defender before ripping a shot high blocker side on Colin Rundell to trim the gap to 2-1. Assists went on the play to J.J Waldrop and Evan Burgess with 6:10 to play in the second as it was a one goal game into period three. The third period was much like the second, with neither team able to generate much in the way of offense. The Dogs would get the insurance marker late in the game when Zack Mazo broke up a play at the Bulldog blue line and then sent Brian Kang up the right wing on a 2 on 1 rush.  Kang would blow a slap shot past the blocker arm of May to put the Dogs up 3-1 with 4:39 to play. The only assist on the play went to Zack Mazo as the Dogs cruised the rest of the way to the win.

Final shots favoured the Dogs 33-26, with Colin Rundell and Harrison May being the goalies of record. The Bulldogs were 0 for 2 on the power play while the Centennials were 1 for 4.

After Friday night off the Dogs hosted the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Saturday night. Another good start saw the Dogs up 1-0 before the game was two minutes old as Chris Moulson stole the puck from Spencer Fraipont behind the Caps net before finding Evan Witt in the slot where he one-timed the pass through the legs of Kiefer Smiley for a 1-0 Dogs lead just 1:43 in. The Capitals would come back to tie it in short order when a Zack Currie point shot deflected twice before finding its way through Matthew Wong. Nick Anderson and Taylor Holst picked up the assists at the 5:25 mark as it was 1-1 after one period. The Dogs again took the lead early in the second, with Evan Witt again finding the net, as he picked up a Brett Mohler shot that missed the net and potted a wrap around before Smiley could recover. Mohler and Mitch MacMillan picked up the assists at the 4:41 mark of period two. Less than two minutes later the Caps came back to tie it, as they hemmed the Dogs in their zone before Nick Anderson found a loose puck on the doorstep on a sharp angle shot that he lifted into the open side for a 2-2 tie 6:33 into the period. Chris Zaires and Kevin Walrod picked up the assists. The Caps then took their first lead of the game late in the period as Anthony Perdicaro drove the puck over the Dogs line up the middle before finding Mickey Spencer driving the net down the left side where he beat Matthew Wong for a 3-2 score with 5:29 left in period two as the Capitals took that lead into period three. They would then build the lead to 4-2 just short of nine minutes in as Kevin Walrod found a loose puck in the slot and roofed it with Chris Zaires and Kevin Walrod getting the helpers 8:36 into the third. Just over a minute later it was 5-2 Capitals when Spencer Edwards picked up a rebound that he roofed, with Nick Anderson and Nicholas Wong getting the assists with 10:10 left in the third. The Dogs didn?t let the two quick ones deflate them, as they came right back to make it 5-3 just 1:07 later when Jason Garrett fought for the puck in the slot before spinning and firing one through the legs of Smiley. Mark Morikawa and Adam Hout picked up the assists. The Dogs would then go to the power play where they had several great chances to make it a one goal game, but they couldn?t beat Smiley. When they did, they had two chances go off the goal post. The Capitals then blew the game open with two late ones from Mickey Spencer with 2:45 to play, and then Taylor Holst with 1:21 left for the 7-3 final.

Shots favoured the Capitals 34-22 with Kiefer Smiley and Matthew Wong being the goalies of record. Special teams were a non factor as the Dogs were 0 for 2 on the power play while the Capitals were 0 for 1.

Sunday afternoon the Dogs week of action concluded with a trip to the Frank Crane Arena to meet the Clippers. The game again started great for the Dogs, as just 52 seconds in Chris Moulson found a Warren Muir dump in that he fed to Evan Witt in the slot where he snapped it by Jonathan Jobin for a 1-0 Dogs lead. The lead was short-lived as the Clippers tied it at one on the power play less than two minutes later as Colin Dueck threw a shot from the right wing boards through the legs of Colin Rundell on the power play. Michael Boivin picked up the only assist at the 2:28 mark. Just 15 seconds later the Clippers took a 2-1 lead when Boivin let a slapper go from the right point that went high blocker side on Rundell. Zac Ashdown had the only helper as the Clippers lead 2-1 into period two. The Dogs would tie it up early in the second on the power play when Eric Fraser sent the puck across the blue line to Ryan Corbiell at the right point where he threw a wrist shot on goal that Brett Mohler tipped through the legs of Jobin. The goal came 3:28 into the second. The Clippers came right back just over two minutes later to take the lead right back with their second power play goal of the game as Connor Krukowski put a shot on net through a scramble that appeared to hit something before finding its way past Rundell blocker side. Tyler Mah and Colton Cyr picked up the assists 5:44 into the second. Three minutes later the Clippers struck AGAIN on the power play, with Anders Franzon putting a wrist shot from the line past the blocker arm of Rundell for a 4-2 lead with 8:28 gone in the second. Carson Schell had the only assist. The Dogs again battled back, this time with Brian Kang being sent in alone on the breakaway by Mitch MacMillan where he went five-hole on Jobin to make it 4-3 just 1:56 after the Clippers had went up by two. Evan Witt also picked up an assist on the play at the 10:24 mark of the second. The score stayed that way until the early moments of the third, when the Dogs held off an initial thrust by the Clippers before getting the tying goal on another breakaway when Robert Lindores send Johnny Rogic in alone where he also went five-hole to tie the game at 4-4 2:34 into period three.
