Hammer’s Weekly Recap

The Dogs week of action began Friday night in Victoria with a rematch against the Grizzlies after the 3-3 tie last week.  From the outset of this game both teams appeared to lack the same energy from the week before as there was not much action or jump early from either team.

The Dogs would strike first to lead 1-0 in the first period as Kevin Ross found Evan Witt at centre ice skating up the left wing. Witt brought the puck over the line before dishing off to Mitch MacMillan. MacMillan gave the puck right back and drove the net, where Witt found him on the give and go where he put a shot short-side past Alexandre Peck at the 11:46 mark of the first. The Grizzlies would tie it up with just 2:15 left in the period as they hemmed the Dogs in their own zone before Brian Nugent was found driving the net by Dustin Mowrey where he also put a short-side shot up and over the blocker side of Matthew Wong to tie things up at 1-1 after the first. The Grizzlies took their first lead of the game early in the second as again they had the Dogs in their own zone when the puck was thrown from the left corner to the slot where Tyler Gubb put it into the open side for a 2-1 Victoria lead 4:30 into the second. Assists on the play went to Tyler Matheson and Cody Bremner. The Dogs then would get caught pushing for the equalizer as Justin Courtnall snuck behind the defence at neutral ice and then picked up a perfect pass from Dustin Mowrey for the breakaway where he went five-hole on Matthew Wong for a 3-1 Grizzlies lead 11:36 into the second. Dustin Mowrey again picked up the only assist. The Dogs battled back to make it 3-2 just four minutes later as they had the Grizz hemmed in their own zone when Evan Witt threw the puck at the net and Mitch MacMillan got a stick on it to tip it past Peck for his second of the game with 4:50 to go in the second. Brett Mohler also got an assist on the play. The backbreaker came just 1:45 later as the Grizzlies went right back up by two goals again when Brian Nugent threw a back door pass from the right corner on the tape of Shawn Stuart for the one-timer into the open side. Dustin Mowrey again picked up an assist on the play as it was 4-2 Victoria with 3:05 to play in the second. The third would be for the most part uneventful until the dying minutes when the Grizzlies built their lead to 5-2 as Evan Pighin drove the net down the right wing before cutting to the middle and throwing a pass that bounced off the stick of Derek Lee and then onto the tape of Brian Nugent where he tapped it in off the back post with 1:49 to play.

Final shots favoured Victoria 33-23 with Matthew Wong and Alexandre Peck being the goalies of record. The Dogs were 0 for 3 on the power play while the Grizzlies were 0 for 5.

Action continued Saturday for the Dogs as the Nanaimo Clippers came to town. This game started well for the Dogs as they came out flying from the puck drop getting good chances around the Clipper net. It would take just over three minutes, but they took a 1-0 lead when Robert Lindores and Jackson Garrett did good work behind the Clipper net before getting the puck out front to Sam Mitchell for the quick one-timer from the slot that went just inside the far post past Evan Smith. The goal came at the 3:17 mark of the first. The lead wouldn?t last long, and that would be a theme for the game, as the Clippers evened it up just 50 seconds later when Steve Mason managed to drive undetected to the net down the far side when Russell Goodman put a perfect pass from the left wing onto his tape for the back door redirect and a 1-1 tie 4:07 in. Connor Krukowski also picked up an assist on the play. The Dogs would take the lead back later in the period, as Evan Witt raced away on a 2 on 1 rush with Mitch MacMillan. Witt elected to shoot from the right circle, a shot that was turned away by Smith. The rebound would be a problem though, as Mark Morikawa caught up with the play and drove the net and in the process found the loose puck in the slot and put it home for a 2-1 Dogs lead with 6:57 to play in the first. Ryan Corbiell also picked up an assist on the play as the Dogs took that lead to the dressing room.  The Clippers got the equalizer early in the second when Michael Boivin put a wrist shot on net from the right point that had eyes as it found its way through the screen and inside the far post past Colin Rundell. Zac Ashdown picked up the only assist 5:09 into period two. Yet again the Dogs took the lead just four minutes later as they worked hard on the power play to get the puck to the net and bang away during a goalmouth scramble. The puck actually appeared to go in off of Anders Franzon in the process, but the Dogs could have cared less at they led 3-2 9:45 into the second. Mitch MacMillan would get credit for the goal, with Colin Phaneuf and Evan Witt picking up the assists. Yet again the Clippers tied it, for the third time in the game as some controversy came into play on the 3-3 goal. In the middle of a goalmouth scramble at their net, referee Steve Bratt blew play dead and signalled that a goal had been scored. After further consultation between the referee and the two linesmen the goal would stand, with Steve Mason getting credit for his second of the game with 3:13 to play in the second. Ronnie Smith would get the only assist on the play on the power play goal as the game headed to the third tied 3-3. The third period would be a back and forth affair with neither team giving up much of anything. That changed in the span of seconds as the Bulldogs were sent to the penalty box twice in quick succession putting the Clippers on a 5 on 3 power play with just over seven minutes left in regulation. The Clippers would get the eventual game winner with 6:04 to play as Steve Mason completed the hat trick with a perfect one-timer from the right circle that went high-far side on Colin Rundell for a 4-3 Clipper lead. Michael Boivin Eric Filiou picked up the assists. The goal couldn?t have been timed better for the Clippers and worse for the Dogs, as it came at the exact second the first penalty expired. The result was the Clippers STAYING on the power play. And the result of that was another goal and the backbreaker just 23 seconds later with Colin Dueck one-timing a shot from the right side past Colin Rundell for a 5-3 Nanaimo lead with 14:17 gone in the third. Connor Krukowski and Joe Perry picked up the assists. That would be it for the scoring, as the Dogs were deflated and they couldn?t muster a comeback.

Final shots favoured Nanaimo 35-27, with Evan Smith and Colin Rundell being the goalies of record. The Dogs were 1 for 5 on the power play while the Clippers were 3 for 6.

The rematch was the next afternoon in Nanaimo, and this one didn?t start well for the Dogs with the Clippers taking a 1-0 lead just 1:42 into the game when Michael Boivin drove the net and picked up his own rebound off the end boards and put it up and over Matthew Wong short-side blocker. Carson Schell picked up the only assist. The Dogs woul
