North Swing Preview

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs hit the road Thursday morning to head up north to B.C.?s Interior in search of their first win of the season with a tough three game in two and a half days road trip.

Friday the Dogs open the swing in Prince George as they take on the Spruce Kings at the Prince George Coliseum.  The Spruce Kings have a free pass to the 2007 Royal Bank Cup Tournament, as they will be the tournaments hosts.  Of course no one wants to use the ?get to the RBC free? card and the goal for the Spruce Kings has to be no less than a BCHL Championship.   The Kings had the off-season to recruit players with the carrot of a guaranteed Royal Bank Cup appearance. No other team in Canada is able to do that, so don?t expect the Sprucies to be anything other than a tough test.   The Spruce Kings moved several veterans last year including star goaltender Brad Theissen in the name of building for this season. The Spruce Kings are currently on a three game winless skid after dropping a 3-2-overtime decision to Quesnel Tuesday, blowing a 2-0 lead in the process.  For the first time in recent memory the Bulldogs will be in Prince George to start their road trip, as opposed to finishing it.  Two of the last three years the Bulldogs have played their third game in three days in Prince George, just before a long ride home.  Last year the Dogs lost 5-1 to the Spruce Kings even though they out shot the Spruce Kings 52-20.  Fans might remember Brad Theissen that game when he set the BCHL?s consecutive shutout minute record.  He entered the game with three straight shutouts and held the Bulldogs off the board until the final ten minutes of the game.  The pre game show is on the air at 6:45pm, the puck drop is at 7:00pm on 93.3 The Peak FM and the Internet broadcast is through the BCHL?s Fanzone at www.bchl.bc.ca

Saturday the Dogs travel to ?the puddle? to take on the Williams Lake TimberWolves.  I can hear Ace on the pre game show in my head from years past ?whenever these two teams play its just chemistry?..high scoring, fire wagon-hockey fan pleasers?  Well last year he was bang on as both games were exactly that.   In Williams Lake last year the Dogs came back from a third period 4-3 deficit to leave town with a 5-4 double overtime win, with Tyler Ruel setting up Brayden Melrose for the winner, after Brian Stewart made a miraculous save with time expiring on the first overtime to keep the Dogs alive.  Depending on how the Bulldogs game goes Friday in Prince George, Saturday could be a match up where two winless teams meet and SOMETHING will have to give?.dare I say ?tie game? and both could still we winless?  You never know.   The TimberWolves are in a rebuilding mode with a new coach and young team laden with locals.  The T-Wolves are 0 and 4 in 2006-2007, losing 6-4 to Trail and 5-2 to Merritt on the road, and 4-2 to Trail and 9-5 to Penticton at home Sunday, their last action before they host the Bulldogs Saturday.   The 93.3 The Peak FM/BCHL Fanzone pre game show is at 7:15, the puck drop at 7:30

The Bulldogs wind up the swing Sunday at ?the vault?, the Quesnel Twin Rinks, as they try to steal two points from the Millionaires.   Quesnel will be ending a very busy couple of days playing their fourth game of the week, and the sixth game of an incredible NINE game home stand.  As previously stated the Mills hosted Prince George Tuesday night, earning their first win of the season 3-2 in OT.  They also host Merritt Friday and Salmon Arm Saturday.  It?s never an easy game in Quesnel, with a small ice surface where things happen very fast.   With the short turn around and a 3:00pm puck drop the Bulldogs will need to have a strong start.  Although it will play into the Bulldogs favour that they will be playing a team in the Millionaires that have an even busier week than they do- albeit in the comforts of their own building.  The Bulldogs took both games from the Millionaires last year as the Mills struggled to a last overall by-a-mile record of 8-41-2 and 9.  Last October the Bulldogs started off their North swing with a bang with a 9-2 win here at the Vault.  Decembers tilt at the ?Pound was a tighter affair, with the Bulldogs winning 6-4.  Tom Bohmer is the new coach and GM of the Millionaires, as he looks to turn the Mills fortunes around and get them back in the playoffs.   Former Bulldog Kevin Noble, traded to the Millionaires in the off-season, will be looking to show his old team what he can do.  The pre game show is on the air at 2:45pm, the puck drop is scheduled for 3:00.
