The Alberni Valley Bulldogs dropped a 5-4 2OT decision to the Surrey Eagles on Saturday night at the South Surrey Arena. The loss leaves the Bulldogs in a 2-0 series hole as the scene shifts back to Port Alberni for Games 3 & 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Trent Wilson got the OT winner at 7:17 of the 2nd overtime to give the Eagles the win. Arron Schwartz forced a turn over on the boards and found Wilson in the high slot.
This is a loss that will sting for the Bulldogs.
After a miserable opening period which saw them trailing 2-0, the Bulldogs came out firing in the 2nd period as Dakota MacIntosh scored twice and Brandon Buhr gave the Bulldogs their 1st lead of the night at 18:21.
Buhr would push the Bulldogs lead to 4-2 early in the 3rd period, before Surrey capitalized off another Bulldogs mistake in their own zone to cut the Bulldogs lead to 4-3. After Matt Matt Kursonis was assessed a Blow to the Head minor at 14:25 of the 3rd, the Eagles found the equalizer at 16:22, also off the stick of Trent Wilson.
The Bulldogs now have to face the reality that they have held 3rd period leads in each of the first two games and find themselves in a 2-0 series deficit.
Returning home might just be the tonic to remedy the situation. The Bulldogs have enjoyed the Dawg Pound and the atmosphere that comes with it. Full credit to the Eagles fans who packed the South Surrey Arena for both Games 1 & 2, now the Bulldogs head home needing a win to climb back into the series.
