Bulldogs Scrape Past Capitals 3-1
Brady Kudrna scored the eventual game winner while adding an assist, and Derik Brouillard made 34 saves to help lead the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs past the Cowichan Valley Capitals 3-1, Friday night in Duncan.
After a scoreless first, the Bulldogs struck twice before the Capitals got one back late heading to the third, where Gleb Semenov struck into an empty net.
“We did a pretty good job of building some momentum, and found a way to get a couple goals.” said Assistant Coach Ryan Rehill,
“Looking back on our last handful of games, the second periods haven’t been our best, so for us to have a really good second was a good sign, and then a pretty solid third as well.”
Forward Drew Bowe notched his first of the season to open the scoring.
Brouillard did the majority of his work in the final frame, kicking out all 17 shots he faced, to help preserve the victory.
“Derek was very good, he helped us weather the storm. And a lot of guys chipping and blocking shots.” added Rehill.
Alberni Valley went 1 for 5 on the power play, while shutting the only two Cowichan Valley man advantages.
It was also the debut of big 2007 born Russian defenseman, Nikita Voiaga.
“He was really good, kind of exactly what we expected of him from watching him on video and then a week of practice.” Praised Rehill,
“He’s a big guy that moves the puck really simply, is physical, blocks shots. He was really vocal on the bench, which is great. It’s a huge benefit to have guys that speak and provide some energy, he’s super competitive – it was a really good first game for him. We’re really happy with him.”
The Bulldogs move back into the win column after having their 4 game win streak snapped, and improve to 8-5 on the season. The Capitals dropped their 3rd in a row.
Up next Alberni Valley will be back at home for a Hallowe’en howler against Langley, Saturday night at 7pm.
