Dogs return home to host Chiefs Friday, Kings Sunday

The Bulldogs return to home ice this weekend for two games and some much needed home cooking after four straight games away from home resulting in three losses and a tie to run their winless streak to six games. Friday night it’s the first meeting since 2005-2006 for the Dogs and the Chilliwack Chiefs since the Chiefs moved to Langley and the Western Hockey League’s Bruins moved in, only to depart this season for Victoria. Left without a team, Chilliwack purchased the Quesnel Millionaires and moved them to the Prospera Centre to bring the Chiefs, in a roundabout way, back to town. The Dogs have Saturday night off from game action, although they will be at the rink anyway to participate in the Port Alberni Association for Community Living’s “Guns N’ Hoses” Charity Hockey Game pitting the RCMP against the Port Alberni Fire Department with the Bulldogs Coaches playing in the game, and the Bulldog Players having a hand in Coaching the game. Sunday afternoon the Dogs weekend of action concludes with a visit from the Powell River Kings.

The Chiefs enter play Friday night with a record of 4-2-0 and 1, good for 9 points and 6th place in the INTERIOR Conference. They were last in action Sunday afternoon in Merritt, where they lost 4-3 to the Centennials in double overtime. It was 0-0 after one but the Centennials jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 90 seconds into period two. The Centennials took a 2-0 lead late in the second on the power play, and then went up 3-0 before the third period was 30 seconds old. The Chiefs began their comeback with a David Thompson power play goal just a minute later to make it 3-1. The score stayed that way until late in regulation where the Chiefs rallied to force overtime with two goals in the final three minutes of the third – first from David Bondra to make it 3-2, and then from Derek Huisman with just over 30 seconds to play in regulation to force overtime. The comeback fell short when the Centennials got the winner early in double OT.

Shots favoured Merritt 40-36 with Mitch Gillam taking the loss in net. The Chiefs went 1 for 5 on the power play while the Centennials went 1 for 1.

The Kings enter play Friday night with a record of 7-3-1 and 0, good for 15 points and 1st place in the Coastal Conference. The Kings have a one point lead on the Surrey Eagles, while the Eagles have two games in hand. The Kings have Friday night off but face the Rivermen in Langley Saturday night before catching an early boat to the Island Sunday morning.

These teams have met once so far this season, a 4-1 Kings win at the Hap Parker Arena on October 7th. With the win that night the Kings ran their record to open the season to a perfect 6 and 0. Following the win the Kings went on a four game winless streak – three losses followed by a tie, before snapping their slide last Saturday with a 5-3 win over the Chiefs in Chilliwack.
