Dogs top Grizzlies, fall to Kings

The Dogs began their final weekend of 2011 Friday night when they visited the Grizzlies in Victoria. The Dogs got off to a good start with an early edge in shots and chances, but it was the Grizzlies who found the net first as Jarryd Ten Vaanholt tipped in a Stefan Gonzales point shot. Wade Murphy also picked up an assist on the play 10:56 into the first. The Dogs would answer back to tie it up five minutes later on the power play when they scored on the rush as Turner Popoff fed the puck up the right wing for Evan Tironese who in turn sent Dylan Nowakowski in alone down the right wing where he cut to the net and went top shelf on the backhand on Garrett Rockafellow to make it 1-1 at 15:27 of the first. The Dogs penalty killers would then stand tall to keep the game tied as they held the Grizzlies off the board on a two-man advantage late in the period for over a minute in duration. The Dogs would carry the bulk of the play in the second period but they were unable to beat Garrett Rockafellow who was rock solid in the Grizzlies net as the Dogs outshot the Grizzlies 11-4 through the period and 25-12 after 40 minutes yet the game remained tied 1-1. The Dogs would get the eventual game winner in the dying seconds of a power play in the early moments of the third period as Walker Hyland took a pass at the side of the net from Justin Morello out of the right corner that he threw out front off a Grizzlies defender and in to make it 2-1 1:57 into the third. The Dogs would make the lead stand through great team defence and especially great penalty killing as they held the fort despite taking back-to-back penalties in the back-half of the period.

Final shots favoured the Bulldogs 35-16 with Max Fenkell picking up the win and Garrett Rockafellow earning 2nd star honours with the loss. The Dogs went 2 for 5 on the power play while killing off all 6 advantages for Victoria.

The Dogs weekend finished Saturday as they wrapped up 2011 with a visit to Powell River to face the Kings. It was a unique travel day for the Dogs as due to low tide they were unable to take their bus on the Ferry. As a result they had to park their bus at the Ferry Terminal, bring the equipment over in a Cube Van, and walk on the Ferry to be picked up by the Kings bus on the other side. The Dogs appeared to be fatigued from the outset, as the Kings made it 1-0 just over two minutes into the game as James Neal found a rebound after an initial Matt Larose breakaway save that he tucked home. Assists on the play went to Jarryd Leung and Taylor Carmola 2:21 into the first. While the Dogs would get their feet under them to keep the Kings off the board for the remainder of the period they struggled to generate any offence. The Kings would blow the game wide open in the early parts of the second with goals just 8 seconds apart to make a 1-0 game a 3-0 game in a big hurry. It was first 2-0 when Carter Shinkaruk walked over the Dogs line on the rush down the left wing where he threw a wrist shot on goal that ramped up off the stick of a Bulldog defender and up and over Larose. The goal was un-assisted at 4:15 of the second. Just 8 seconds later an odd-man rush off the ensuing centre ice faceoff made it 3-0 as Evan Richardson tapped a back-door feed by Teagan Waugh into the open side as the Dogs called timeout to right the ship. The move appeared to work as four minutes later it was a 3-1 game when Dylan Nowakowski blasted a slap shot from the left circle through the legs of Sean Maguire to give him the outright scoring lead. Brandon Adams picked up the only assist on the play at the 8:22 mark of the second. That would be as close as the Dogs would get though as they couldn’t build on the momentum. The Kings would take a 4-1 lead to the room after two periods when they connected late in the period just 5 seconds into a power play opportunity as Cohen Adair walked to the net off the draw and deked one past Larose with Evan Richardson picking up the only assist at 16:41 of the second. The only goal the rest of the way came late in regulation with the Kings on a 5 on 3 power play as the Dogs picked up two minor penalties on the same play. Teagan Waugh would cap the scoring making it a 5-1 final when he tipped a Jon Jutzi point shot past Larose with 1:16 to play with Cohen Adair also drawing an assist.

Final shots favoured the Kings 35-27 with Matt Larose and Sean Maguire being the goalies of record. The Kings went 2 for 7 on the power play while the Dogs went 0 for 2.
