Dogs visit Caps, host Grizzlies and Kings Friday and Saturday

The Bulldogs have the same schedule as they had last week as they are on the road Wednesday night before returning home for games Friday and Saturday night. The week begins with a visit to the Caps at the “Big Stick” tonight before Victoria and Powell River visit the Dog Pound.  The Dogs enter play Wednesday night 8th place in the Coastal Conference with a record of 13-20-2 and 0 for 28 points, one back of the 7th placed Rivermen with the Dogs having three games in hand. The Dogs are 18 points back of the Express for 4th place and a playoff position, with the Dogs having two games in hand.

The Capitals continue to lead the Conference with a record of 23-9-1 and 5 for 52 points, four up on Powell River with a game in hand.  The Caps were last in action Sunday afternoon in Coquitlam where they had a two game winning streak snapped with a 5-4 double OT loss to the Express. The Caps started the game well on a Jacob Charles goal three minutes in before the Express tied it at 1-1 with a power play marker ten minutes later. It was 2-1 Caps just over a minute into the second on a Devin Gannon goal, and then 3-1 on a Matt Brown power play marker just short of the halfway mark of the game for the two goal lead after two periods. The Express would get within one two minutes into the third but the Caps replied to retake the two goal lead on a Brayden Sherbinin goal with just under ten minutes to play in regulation to make it 4-2. Coquitlam made it a one goal game with 3:10 to play and then forced overtime with a power play goal with 45 seconds to play. There would be no scoring in 4 on 4 overtime before the Express got the winner just over a minute into double OT.

Shots favoured the Caps 49-33 in a losing cause for Brady Rouleau in net. The Capitals went 1 for 2 on the power play while the Express went 2 for 4.

It’s the fourth meeting between the teams in Duncan this season, and the fifth overall after the Caps won the most recent meeting at the Dog Pound 7-4 last Friday. Despite the loss Dogs have owned the season series so far picking two wins a tie so far in the games played in Duncan.

Victoria enters play this week on 6th place in the Conference with a record of 18-21-0-0 for 36 points, 10 back of Coquitlam for the final playoff spot with the Express holding two games in hand. They were last in action Sunday afternoon on the road when they lost 10-2 to the Westside Warriors. The Grizzlies actually started the game well when they took a 1-0 lead on a Coltyn Hansen goal six minutes into the game. The Warriors replied less than two minutes later with a power play goal to tie it less than two minutes later. The Grizzlies would reply with a power play goal of their own from Chase Kaiser with twelve minutes gone but once again the Warriors replied in short order less than two minutes later for a 2-2 tie after 20 minutes. The Warriors came out absolutely flying in the second to blow the game open with four goals in the first four minutes of the second including one on the power play to take a 6-2 lead before adding one more at the halfway mark of the game for a 7-2 lead after two. The Warriors continued the romp scoring three more in the first ten minutes of the third for the 10-2 final.

Shots favoured the Warriors 47-20 with Jamie Tucker getting tagged with the loss giving up 7 on 27 shots and Garrett Rockafellow playing the other half of the game giving up 3 on 20 shots. The Grizzlies went 1 for 7 on the power play while Westside went 2 for 7.

Friday’s game is the fifth head to head meeting between the teams this season and the first at the Dog Pound since the Bulldogs picked up a 6-3 win in their second game of the season back on September 30th. The Grizzlies won the next two at the Bear Mountain Arena before the Bulldogs won the most recent meeting by a 2-1 score on December 30th in Victoria to even the season series at 2-2.

The Kings enter play this week in 2nd place in the Coast with a record of 22-13-2-2 good for 48 points, four points behind the Caps and two points up on the Surrey Eagles with the Eagles holding four games in hand. The Kings were last in action Saturday in Coquitlam where they had a three game winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to the Express. Before the Kings visit the Pound on Saturday they will see action Friday night in Surrey, and before heading home they pay the Grizzlies a visit on Sunday afternoon.

It’s the fifth meeting between the teams so far on the campaign with the Kings holding a 3-1 edge. After the Kings won the first game 4-1 in Powell River in early October the Dogs won the return match by the game 4-1 score at the Dog Pound in late October. The Kings won another one 4-1 in early December and 5-1 in the most recent meeting on New Year’s Eve in Powell River.
