“I’m very excited and honoured to be added to the 2014 Team Pacific staff,” said Adam Hayduk. “So many of my fellow coaches and mentors have had the honour to be named to Team Pacific in the past, including ex-Bulldogs assistant coach Rick Schievink. It’s an honour to be a part of such an experienced staff as we all work towards a gold medal,” concluded Hayduk.
Team Pacific will be comprised of the top 22 players from the Pacific region. Each province identified 23 players (3 G, 7 D, 13 F) to move on to the Team Pacific Summer Development Camp that will consist of 46 players. The Team Pacific Summer Development Camp will be held July 24-28 in Calgary, AB. From this camp players will be scouted with their club team until the Team Pacific roster is named in November.
“The 1997 birth-year is especially strong in BC and Alberta,” said Hayduk. “It’s going to be a treat to work with such a dynamic and skilled group of players.”
Both Team BC and Team Alberta appeared in the 2013 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup finals with Team BC eventually taking the gold medal.
Team Pacific has included some of the top hockey players that Canada has ever produced. Some notable graduates who have competed on Team Pacific include:
-
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2010)
-
Evander Kane (2008)
-
Brent Seabrook (2002)
-
Dion Phaneuf (2002)
-
Mike Green (2002)
-
Jarome Iginla (1994)
-
Joe Sakic (1986)
The Under 17 program is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. Many players who compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge go on to represent Canada with the National Men’s Under 18 Team, National Junior Team and National Men’s Team.
Hayduk isn’t a stranger to short-term competitions. He won two silver medals in the BC Winter Games in 2006 and 2008, won the 2011 U17 BC Cup as head coach, and won a gold medal with Team BC at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
As a side note, four players with ties to the Alberni Valley also won the 2011 U17 BC Cup with Hayduk as head coach: current Bulldogs Brad Rebagliati and Bo Pellah, 2012/13 Bulldogs affiliate player Rylan Ball, and 2013 Midget Tier 3 Provincial champion Beau Wilson.
