Hammer’s Weekly Recap

The Bulldogs week began Friday night as they hosted the Penticton Vees at the Pound.  In a very tight opening to the game, shots were few and far between as the game was ten minutes old. The Dogs would then crack the nut to get the first shot on goal, before the Vees fired back with eight in a row to test Harrison May, who looked solid from the outset.

The Bulldogs would open the scoring with 1:04 left in the period as Marcello Ranallo picked off an ill-advised up the middle pass and found Daniel Moriarty behind the Vees defence for the breakaway on Alex Evin from the hash marks and in. Evin would make the first save with his left toe, but Moriarty would muscle the rebound home for a 1-0 Dogs lead after one. Just 2:42 into the second the lead was 2-0 as Marcello Ranallo dumped the puck into the Vees zone where it was picked up by Mandeep Nijjar in the left corner. He would throw a quick one on goal that would be stopped by Evin from the sharp angle, but he couldn?t control the rebound as Ben Payne was right on the doorstep to put it home. Just four minutes later the Dogs lead would be 3-0 as Chris Moulson picked the puck up from Warren Muir and walked out the right side before wrapping a pass to Matt Frydrysek walking to the net down the left side of the slot. Frydrysek would fire it into the open side before Evin could get over as the Dogs had a commanding lead 7:20 into the second. The Vees would call time out to rally the troops, but it would be the Dogs that kept coming as Frydrysek scored from an ugly angle after Eliot Raibl kept the puck in at the line and Zack Mazo dumped it to the left hand corner. Frydrysek would pick the puck up and from the goal line throw a pass at the crease intended for Adam Baldassarre off the back post. Or so it looked. In the end, it hit Evin and bounced in, as the rout was on and the Dogs lead was 4-0 11:08 into period two. Seconds later, the Vees would be sent to the penalty box and the Dogs would find the back of the net after letting plenty of shots fly on the power play. James Kerr would find a rebound off a Daniel Moriarty drive in the slot and put it past Brian Mountain, in for Alex Evin after the fourth Bulldog goal. Marcello Ranallo picked up his third assist of the night as well on the power play goal at 13:45 of the second for a 5-0 Dogs lead after two. Most of the third would be uneventful until the Vees found the net when Eric Kroshus was credited with tipping in a shot from the right point. Michael Hengen and Brett Hextall picked up the assists on the goal as it was 5-1 with 7:11 to play in the game. The Dogs would make it 6-1 on the power play with 55 seconds to go in the game as James Kerr fed the puck from the left wing boards to Eliot Raibl at the top of the point. Raibl?s point shot would glance off a Vee stick and go wide, but as luck would have it the angle resulted in a perfect bounce off the end boards and onto the stick of Daniel Moriarty waiting off the post for the tap in for his second of the game.  The Vees would get a late one themselves on the power play as a cross-ice pass was muscled past Harrison May by Brett Hextall from Austin Smith and Eric Kroshus to make it 6-2 with 30 seconds to go. It would do little to dampen the mood in the Pound as the Dogs and their fans enjoyed the final ticks of the clock. In the end, it might?ve put a smile on Chris Moulson?s face a while later as it made his assist be on the game winner. As time expired, a brawl nearly erupted behind the Dogs net, but it would be prevented by good work from the officiating crew.  Final shots favoured the Vees 37-30, as Harrison May was stellar in picking up the win and first star honours. Alex Evin took the loss giving up the first four goals before giving way to Brian Mountain. The Vees were 2 for 6 on the power play while the Dogs were 2 for 7.

Saturday night the Bulldogs played their last final home game of the season as they hosted the Powell River Kings. The game started well for the Dogs as Evan Witt put a shot that wasn?t hard but was well placed into the top corner short side on Chris Rawlings just 4:41 into the game. Eliot Raibl picked up the only assist. The lead didn?t last long as the vaunted Kings power play went to work and quickly evened the score just over four minutes later as Reid Campbell one-timed a cross ice pass from the right point far side past Devon Stankoven. Darcy Oakes and Sean Murray picked up the assists 8:53 into the first. That would bring a quick end to Stankoven?s night, as Harrison May would come in. Just short of four minutes later the Kings took a 2-1 lead again scoring on the power play, as Trevor Wilson one timed a shot that appeared to hit the head of Harrison May. Darcy Oakes was standing off the right post where he found the loose puck and tucked it into the open side before May could find it. Trevor Wilson had the only assist at the 12:48 mark. Seconds later, the Bulldogs went to the power play looking for the equalizer. It would be the Kings instead finding the net as Darcy Oakes stole the puck at the Kings line and raced in on Harrison May on the shorthanded breakaway where he scored on a quick deke for a 3-1 lead for the Kings 14:16 into the first. The Dogs would get the crucial next goal to make a game of it 6:20 into the second on the power play as Evan Witt found Daniel Moriarty in the left circle with a cross-ice pass. Moriarty would wait and then snap a perfect shot into the top left hand corner. Marcello Ranallo picked up the second assist.  After killing off a penalty, and then holding on against several shifts where the Kings had them hemmed into their own zone, the Dogs found the tying goal as Nick Sandor and Matt Frydrysek worked the puck out of the left corner and back to Jordan Principalli, who put another well placed shot into the top corner glove side on Rawlings for a 3-3 tie at the 14:29 mark. Just two minutes later the Pound was really rocking as Lee Patzer and Ben Payne just missed on a pretty passing play on the rush as Rawlings made a great right toe save. Evan Witt and Payne would stick with the play and work the puck again out of the left hand corner to Lee Patzer in the left faceoff circle. Patzer would get rid of the puck in a hurry, snapping one low short-side on Rawlings for a 4-3 Bulldog lead with 3:20 left in the second. The Dogs kept their foot on the gas in the third, as Chris Moulson found a loose puck in front and put it by Rawlings for a 5-3 lead from Mark Morikawa and Warren Muir 6:47 into the third. Seconds later, Moulson would find the trailer in Eliot Raibl, who put a high shot off the bar and past a fallen Chris Rawlings for a 6-3 lead with 7:24 gone in the third. The Kings weren?t about to roll over, as just two minutes later Trevor Wilson one-timed a shot through the legs of May from the point from Clay Harvey and Darcy Oakes for a 6-4 score and the Kings third power play goal of the game at the 9:37 mark. That would do it for the game scoring, as the Bulldogs and their fans celebrated the final home game of the season as time wound down. With the win, the Bulldogs now have their first three game winning streak of the seas
