Muir Leads Bulldogs to 8-3 Win

The Bulldogs week began Tuesday night when the Cowichan Valley Capitals made their second visit of the season to the Dog Pound. The game was an exciting one from the opening puck drop, with both teams having their fair share of chances early.

Laurent Brossoit was good in the Caps net early, turning away 10 shots before the game was even three minutes old. The Dogs just kept coming though, as they would take a 1-0 lead on a nice play by Mark MacMillan, cutting cross ice and then throwing the puck back against the grain for his brother Mitch to tip into the open side. David Dziurzynski also picked up an assist on the play 5:37 into the first. The Dogs took a 2-0 lead just over a minute later when Warren Muir continued his hot play going high short-side on Laurent Brossoit. Trent Dorais picked up the lone assist 6:50 into the period. The end of the period would be delayed with Capitals forward Anthony Perdicaro being injured and staying down on the ice for an extended period. The officials would decide to send the teams to the rooms to flood the ice, and they would return to play the final minute of the first after the flood, and then go immediately into the second. The Dogs would be dominant through most of the second period, as they built their lead to 3-0 just three minutes into the period with Jackson Garrett in the box for slashing when Mark MacMillan put a perfect pass onto the tape of Warren Muir who went high far-side on Brossoit. The goal came at the 3:23 mark of the second. Less than three minutes later it was 4-0 Dogs with Sam Mitchell picking up his own rebound off the end boards, and ripping it under the bar short side. Warren Muir and Trent Dorais picked up the assists at the 6:04 mark. The score would stay that way until the late stages of the period, when the Dogs scored one of their prettiest goals this season with a tic-tac-toe passing play where Josh Mitchell dished the puck to Jesse Halikas on the right side and he then found Casey Bailey wide open in front for the one-timer and a 5-0 Dogs lead with 4:14 to play in the second. That would be it for Laurent Brossoit on the game, as he was replaced by Max Pelzner. The Dogs would get to him two minutes later when Mitch MacMillan tipped in a wrist shot by his brother mark to make it 6-0 Dogs after two periods. David Dziurzynski also picked up an assist on the goal with 2:19 left in the period. The Dogs would get caught by the Capitals in the third period, as they came out flying while the Dogs were flat. Just 54 seconds into the period the Caps got on the board to make it 6-1 as Nick Anderson banged his third rebound past Scott Lewan, who came in for Frank Slubowski to start the period. Mike Hammond and Jackson Garrett picked up the assists. The Caps continued to play inspired and the Dogs continued to be a little out of it, as they made it 6-2 when Nick Anderson cut in alone down the left wing and beat Lewan with a five hole deke 9:44 into the period. Mike Hammond picked up the only assist. Less than a minute later the Caps made it 6-3 with Mikael Jung racing in on the breakaway where he was taken down and crashed into Lewan. The net would come off, and the puck would end up in it. After some discussion the officials would award the goal to the Caps. Shawn Mueller and Sanfred King picked up the assists at the 10:23 mark of the third. The Bulldogs coaching staff at this point had seen enough, as they called their time out to slow the game down and have a talk with their troops. The tactic seemed to work, as less than a minute later they found the net when Warren Muir tipped in a Kevin Ross point shot for his first career hat trick to make it 7-3. Tyler Berkholtz also picked up an assist 11:22 into the third. Three minutes later the scoring would be completed as Ryan Corbiell put a slap shot at the net that hit a Capital defender and went in to make it 8-3. Tyler Berkholtz and Josh Mitchell picked up the assists at 14:39 of the third.
