Bulldogs come back in 3rd to beat Capitals

Ryan Miotto scored a pair of third period power-play goals, including the game winner with 3:06 remaining in regulation, to lift the Bulldogs to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Sunday evening at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

Miotto finished the night with two goals and two assists, including an assist on Jackson Doucet’s man-advantage goal to open the scoring midway through the first period. The Capitals replied on a power-play of their own minutes later, and took a 3-1 lead on a pair of goals 24 seconds apart late in the frame.

The teams traded goals in the second period, with Bulldogs captain Marcus Walter bringing his team within one before Preston Brodziak tipped a Timber Lewis point shot to restore Cowichan’s two-goal lead heading into intermission.

Keaton Mastrodonato set up Miotto’s first goal of the night three minutes in to the third before scoring one of his own to tie the game with 5:41 left on the clock. A pair of late tripping penalties put the Bulldogs up 5-on-3 and Miotto scored the game winner with 3:06 left on the clock.

John Hawthorne stopped all seven shots he faced in the third period and made 29 saves on the night to pick up the win.

The Bulldogs are back in action for a New Year’s Eve matinee against the Nanaimo Clippers at the Multiplex. The game is set for a 2:00 PM puck drop.
